1.0 OBJECTIVE :
- To provide a written procedure for destruction of microbial waste.
2.0 SCOPE :
- This procedure applies for destruction of microbial plate containing of media, microbial cultures.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY :
- Microbiologist
4.0 ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Head of Department
5.0 PROCEDURE :
- Wear nose mask and hand gloves prior to starting the destruction of microbial waste.
- Collect and transfer all used microbiological media, culture and contaminated glassware to washing area.
- Remove the liquid media and agar in a waste destruction container with the help of spatula.
- Add a disinfection solution (Dettol or Savlon 2.5% v/v).
- Leave the waste media and glassware for 30 minutes to facilitate reaction of disinfection solution.
- Transfer all the media to S.S. container and keep the S.S. container to autoclave.
- Start the autoclave at 15 lbs/in2 for 30 minute.
- After completing the cycle through the autoclave, Remove the S.S. container and drain out all the waste in the wash basin, after that just insert a bit of Dettol or Savlon 2.5% v/v in wash basin for caution.
- Precaution:
- Wash the hands with soap and then rinse with 70% v/v IPA after completion the destruction operation.
- Do not autoclave the fresh media for routine use with destruction cycle.
