1.0 OBJECTIVE :
- To describe a procedure for handling of desiccator.
2.0 SCOPE :
- The SOP is applicable for the cleaning and operation of desiccator used in Quality Control Department.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY :
- Quality control Chemist and above

5.0 PROCEDURE :
5.1 Operation :
- Ensure cleanliness of desiccator.
- Ensure enough silicon grease is applied on top circumference of desiccator and on ground-glass rim of the desiccator lid.
- Ensure labeling of the container.
- Open the desiccator (rotate the lid on), place the container in desiccator.
- After placing the container in desiccator, close it quickly (rotate the lid off).
- Remove the container whenever required by partly opening the lid (rotate the lid) of desiccators.
- After removal of container from desiccator, tightly closed it with lid.
5.2 Cleaning :
- Empty the desiccators.
- Remove the silica gel and perforated ceramic plate.
- Wipe the desiccator with dry lint free cloth.
- After ensuring desiccators is dry and clean, place the sufficient silica gel in to the lower compartment of the desiccator.
- Apply enough silicon grease on top circumference of desiccator and ground-glass rim of the desiccator lid.
5.3 Frequency :
- Change the silica whenever it seem to be required. (silica gels typically change from blue to pink)
5.4 Safety and precautions :
- Hot container should be hold with the help of tongs.
- To prevent damage to a desiccator the lid should be carefully slid on and off instead of being directly placed onto the base.
